Add page numbers to a PDF

Put page numbers on a document that has none. Choose the position, the format and the starting number.

Free · no account · nothing uploaded

A file handed to a court, a jury or a client gets paginated. It is also the only way to refer to a page in a conversation, and to spot a sheet that went missing after printing.

How it works

Drop your file on the page, or click to pick it from your folders.

Start the job. It runs inside your browser: nothing is sent to a server.

Download the result. No account, no watermark, no queue.

When this really helps

Prepare an official file

Paginated exhibits can be cited and checked.

Paginate an assembled document

After a merge, the original numbering is worthless.

Make proofreading easier

A reviewer can point at “page 14” without ambiguity.

What the conversion keeps, and what it loses

Working inside a browser comes with limits a hosted service does not have. Here they are in plain words, so you know what to expect before you start.

What is kept

  • All existing content, identically
  • Selectable text
  • The file weight, almost unchanged

What is not carried over

  • Nothing: only one line of text is added to every page

Worth knowing about the format

The number is written in a PDF standard font, dark grey, a few millimetres from the edge. It sits on top of the content: if your pages already have a busy footer, pick a free position.

Not the right tool?

Why it's free

Online converters receive your file on their servers, process it, then promise to delete it. Every document costs them computing time: that is why they charge, and why they cap file sizes.

Here, the work happens on your own computer. The page contains no server code: your document cannot be received, because it is never sent. So there is nothing to bill, nothing to cap, and nothing to delete afterwards. Cut your connection once the page has loaded — everything keeps working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start at a number other than 1?

Yes. The “Start at” field shifts the whole numbering, which helps when a cover or a contents page is counted separately.

What if my pages already have a footer?

Pick one of the other five positions: the number sits on top of the content, it does not push it aside.

Is the numbering real text?

Yes, it is selectable and searchable text, not an image.

Edit the text in a PDF — Fix a line that is already written, even on a scanned document. This is the feature other services charge for, and the natural starting point when you need to retouch before converting.
